Aberdeen, Scotland

Learnt to ski:

I was lucky enough to learn at an early age up at the Lecht in Scotland. No finer place to start a lifetime of skiing.

Summer months:

All a bit mixed these days due to children and schooling so we spent a good chunk of the year in Meribel but then we all decamp to Alderney in the UK Channel Islands for the summer months. A unique little island that is like stepping back in time (in a good way!).

Favourite piste/run:

Sooooooo many to chose from. All depends on the day and snow etc but a sure fire winner for me is top Saulire down to Le Praz first thing in the morning. Great snow, always pisted and its a long long run. I also really like the skiing round La Tania and Le Praz in general as its often cold and shaded so the snow is good but quiet which I particularly like!

Favourite off-piste area:

When it is good I think Mont Vallon has my favourite terrain. There is couloir off the top which is a huge favourite of mine.

Favourite lift:

Probably the Dent du Burgin in Meribel. From that one lift there is option for everything. A nice cruisy blue, a really great challenging red, it can get some great moguls during the season and the off-piste above it is pretty special…

Best view:

Skiing back from Courchevel to Meribel around last lifts – from Vizelle/Suisse area. Something about the light and the massive range of mountains that are in front of you.

Mountain restaurant:

Somewhere near the upper slopes between Les Menuires and Val Thorens is L’Alpage which I really enjoy. Simple, done well, reasonable price and good service.

Village restaurant/bar/apres:

Apres I think has to be the Ronnie. Traditional and still the best. Although LDV can be great fun too. Barometer in town as a brilliant bar and does some really delicious pizzas so that gets my vote too.

A must do experience:

Go to the Fromagerie restaurant in Meribel. Best fondue in town. Be aware though that you will come out with a strong scent of cheese so dont wear your best fur coat.

Simple piece of advice:

Keep it fun and enjoy the process of going out into the mountains surrounded by good views and good friends. You’ll ski better for it!

Don’t leave home without:

A snood/buff/neckwarmer. I dont know how there was a time when these didn’t exist. Keeps you warm when it cold and helps cover you up with the sun is out.
