ski touring meribel and courchevel

5 Reasons to go ski touring

Let’s be honest. We all love a bluebird day lapping Méribel’s and Courchevel’s perfectly groomed pistes. But every now and then it’s nice to swap resort life for something a little quieter.

Ski touring isn’t just for elite mountaineers anymore. Thanks to modern equipment, it’s more accessible than ever, and it’s become one of our favourite ways to spend a day in the mountains.

1. Escape the Rat Race

Sometimes the best part of the day is heading in the opposite direction to everyone else. Within half an hour of leaving the lifts behind, the noise disappears. No queues, no crowded pistes, no race to get the last table for lunch. Just you, your skis and a mountain that suddenly feels wild again.

2. See the Mountains Properly

There’s something different about earning your turns. You notice things you’d never see from a chairlift—the silence after fresh snowfall, animal tracks crossing the valley, the changing light as the sun climbs higher. It’s a side of Méribel and the Three Valleys that many visitors never experience.

3. It’s Brilliant for Your Fitness

Don’t worry, you don’t need to be an endurance athlete. Ski touring is simply a fantastic way to spend a day outdoors. You set your own pace, work the uphill, enjoy the downhill and, somehow, finish the day feeling tired in the best possible way. It’s exercise that never really feels like exercise.

4. The Equipment Has Come a Long Way

Gone are the days when touring skis meant compromising on the descent. Modern skis, boots and bindings are incredibly versatile. Many setups are just as enjoyable cruising the pistes as they are heading off on a tour, making them a great investment if you like to mix up your skiing.

5. There’s Always Another Adventure

Your first tour might just be a gentle climb above Méribel before skiing untouched snow back to the resort. Before long, you could be planning sunrise missions, exploring hidden valleys or even spending the night in a mountain refuge before skiing somewhere completely new the next day.

At Marmalade Ski School, we love introducing people to ski touring because it opens up a completely different way of enjoying the mountains. Whether you’re curious to try it for the first time or looking to build the skills and confidence for bigger adventures, we’ll help you discover why ski touring has become one of the fastest-growing disciplines in the Alps.

Who knows… your favourite ski day might not involve a ski lift at all.
