Get to know Nick
Nick had a rare hatred for skiing the first time he attempted it on his local dry ski slope in Nottingham at the age of 5, a far removed feeling from the love for the sport he has today. He began teaching in 1998 in Canada but would call Meribel his home resort having settled here since 2001 and founded Marmalade along with Del & Greg in 2010. Nick has enjoyed competing in both bump and synchro competitions (an interesting combo) but now prefers to stick to teaching on the slopes instead. In the summer he keeps himself busy and dusty working as both a plasterer and an electrician but would have preferred to be a superstar DJ or even a poet!
Describe your perfect day on the mountain.
Beautiful blue sky, crisp cold air (so cold that you can see the little crystals floating through the air, with fields and fields of bottomless powder. All the glory!
Early Renaissance vs Impressionism?
I’m a Renaissance man. Because of trifle. That was the era when trifle was invented and I just love a good trifle.
What do you most like about being a ski instructor?
I love the fact that we meet so many people and the huge diversity of the connections that we make in such a short space of time.
What is your favourite film or TV programme?
Favourite film is The Usual Suspects – it’s so clever! Keyser Soze…….
What is your summer job and location?
Truthfully?? I spend two months of each year taming butterflies at the New York Zoo and then I join the world International Tiddlywinks tour for the rest of my summer. I’m currently ranked 4th in the world for my age category. A lot of people don’t realise the skill and intensity of practise that is required.
If you could swap lives with someone famous who would it be?
James bond – cars, gadgets, women and danger! Who wouldn’t want that?
Favourite ski resort and why?
Meribel. It’s awesome.
