Mont Brequin Ski Tour

The Mont Brequin Ski Tour.

A recent day off saw us take advantage of this season’s cracking conditions and headed over to Val Thorens. Up the Cime Caron and from there we were under our own steam toward the summit.

The Mont Brequin is an easily reachable peak by capable and keen skiers who have some experience with ski touring. From the top the views are incredible looking South over the Maurienne valley and toward Les 2 Alpes, Alpe d’Huez, La Grave and beyond.

There are plenty of variants to choose from to ascend the peak and likewise to descend from the summit. This is a tour that can revisited many times without having to chose the same route twice.

The Route

Our ascent saw us follow the most common route to begin with – skirting along the ridge and heading under the summit’s North face. From there the options are to continue round to the Col de la Vallee Etroite or take the “direttissima” and boot pack up. We chose the latter!!

From the top we took a route down the North facing slopes to begin with and were rewarded with some fantastic winter powder – we were always hoping to find snow like this but it was still a pleasant surprise at how good it was given the date – 6th April.

From here the route followed a steady northerly direction and we were treated to yet more wintery, wind blown power. A little lower when getting back to the more common routes down the Lac de Lou we found ourselves skiing some not too unpleasant spring snow.

The lake was still sufficiently covered to make a pond skim unchallenging so that event was left till the next visit.

Eventually coming back out onto the pistes below Val Thorens.

The Mont Brequin ski tour – a fanatastic day over the back of Val Thorens. Many possibilities to ascend and even more for descending!
